Community wardens; for some they’re a common occurrence but for others, totally alien. If you’re part of the latter group, then allow us to explain what a Community Warden is. Their primary duty is to provide a uniformed presence within your community. Their presence is there simply to provide a deterrent effect that will ultimately reduce crime levels along with anti-social behaviour, not to mention the residents’ fear of crime taking place. More than this however, community wardens provide a great sense of reassurance and for many help them feel much safer within their own community.
While a community warden won’t replace the likes of the police, park rangers or any other form of warden, they do offer a service that complements the ones already in place.
Community Wardens: What Do They Do?
With that in mind, we wanted to discuss exactly how community wardens make many feel safer in their own homes. Here’s a simple run down that shows exactly what they do and how they could contribute to your community:

They Provide A Uniformed Presence
Community wardens provide a professional and uninformed appearance. Their presence is mainly on foot and therefore provides a much higher visibility on the streets. They talk to people, become a part of the community and therefore provide a greater deterrent. Their visible presence reassures local people, making them feel safer overall.
They Provide A Voice For Your Community
As well as patrolling your streets and helping to reduce crime, community wardens also provide a valuable set of eyes. On their patrols, they’ll inevitably come across safety as well as environmental problems. Due to their incredibly approachable nature, they’ll also find themselves having local people report issues to them directly. They’ll then report these issues for you. From dog fouling to fly tipping, graffiti and more – you can rest assured your community warden will have it covered. They’ll also act as added eyes and ears for the council by spotting, investigating and of course reporting incidents.

They’ll Help Develop A Community Spirit
It’s all in the title. As well as responding promptly to help prevent and defuse any problems or public order issues that may be occurring, community wardens will also do their best to help develop a community spirit. They’ll do this not only by being approachable, responsive and offering great communication with the community but they’ll also help develop links with the youth within the community, working with them in order to help minimise disorder in the first place.
